„Pavilion of the future” made of Baubuche

A 30-m-long and 8-m-high framework pavilion made of beechwood has been centre stage on the Goetheplatz in Frankfurt am Main since the end of 2015. The so-called „pavilion of the future” is operated by the organisers of the „Architektursommer Rhein-Main” together with the urban gardening initiative „Frankfurter Garten”. For the next year, the temporary structure will provide a space for exhibitions, talks and workshops.

Thanks to its timber design, the pavilion is a striking and harmonious addition to this central location. It is surrounded by the historic sandstone and contemporary curtain façades that encircle the „vast square” (FAZ) created by the square trilogy of Rossmarkt, Goetheplatz and Rathenauplatz and which has stood in its present form since the post-war years. The pavilion is seen by the Frankfurt municipality as a test to see whether the erection of a building in this position across the square could breathe life back into this underused inner-city space.
